Red Oak Bowl
The bowl is made from a red oak tree trunk. Originally the plan was to have it stand about eight inches high. While turning the outside shape, one side split fell off the base due to an inherent split in the wood. The spalting and wood grain patterns were too nice to throw the piece into a burn pile, so what you see is the result of carving, sanding and finishing the remains. It is unusual. The bowl's diameter is 12 inches and the rim is flat, smooth and 1.5 inches wide. It stands 3 inches in height and is 2.5 inches deep. It has a lacquer gloss finish and weighs 6 pounds.
